Identify your riding style - English or Western:
|
English and Western riding share along with some similarities, they also have some major differences. New comers should understand the fundamentals of these two riding styles.
1- Saddle: Larger and heavier than the English saddle, Western saddles were originally designed with hard-riding cowboys in mind. They distribute a rider's weight more evenly across a horse's back, allowing horse and rider to remain more comfortable on long rides.
2- Contact: Riders use reins to communicate changes in direction to a horse. In English riding, a rider holds one rein in each hand. When the rider gently pulls a rein, it applies pressure to the bit held in the horse's mouth, coaxing it to turn. In Western riding, a rider holds both reins in one hand. Western-style riders shift their weight or lay a rein against the horse's neck to steer the horse.
3- Position: Both the English and Western riding styles call for a rider to sit up straight with relaxed arms and legs.
4- Boots: Western riders typically wear cowboy-style boots in competition, although many also like high lace-up boots or even ankle-high paddock boots. English-style riders often prefer knee-high leather boots, particularly in competition.

Leather can lasts up to 30 years. Through the years it has already established an attitude and traditional beat. It is also easy to clean and very dureable compared to synthetic leather. However, it is less conspicuous because it is usually dark.

Find Your Size:
| Tall boots for riding should fit properly in the foot, calf, and be of the correct height. Here are some important guide lines which will definitely help you in finding a perfect fit riding tall boots. |
FOOT FITTING:
Instep: Boot has only the instep to hold it securely to the foot. Hence, proper fit in the instep is of utmost importance. The fit should be snug, not tight or loose.
Ball: When you walk or run, you bend your foot at its widest part. This is called the ball. Same with boots. The ball of the foot should rest on the ball of the boot. If the boot is too short, the ball of the foot will sit too far forward and force the toes into the toe box.
Heel: A new pair of boots will slip slightly in the heel because there is nothing to prevent the heel of the foot from riding up slightly. When the boot is new, the sole is stiff. As you wear the boot the sole is “flexed”. With time, most of the slippage will disappear.
Ankle:The ankle must be a bit loose to allow the foot to pass through, but the slimmer the fit, the nicer the look. |
 |
CALF FITTING:
Calf width: The calf should fit snugly at its widest point with breeches on – they shouldn’t hurt your leg, but if you
can fit your hand inside the tops they’re too big in the calf.
Calf height: To check for correct height, stand with your knees bent to approximately your riding position. The shaft should reach all the way up to the bend in the back of your knee. If the boots are new, they should be at least 1" too tall, to allow for shortening of the shaft as the leather softens and breaks in |
